The Alberta Regional Professional Development Consortia (ARPDC) wanted to replace its 8 separate websites using several different content management systems with a single Joomla content management system.
The legacy websites consisted of English-language and French language provincial websites, and 6 regional consortia websites. The regional consortia representing the Grande Prairie, Lac La Biche, Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary, and Lethbridge regions. The new websites had to use a single database to facilitate sharing of resources on each consortia website as well as on the provincial English and French-language websites.

Building the new ARPDC websites has been a mammoth task. The Alberta Regional Professional Development Consortia (ARPDC) promotes student learning and achievement, school improvement, and parental engagement in Alberta schools by providing professional development opportunities to local, regional and provincial stakeholders. To fulfill its mandate, the new websites had to enable each consortium to publish its own learning opportunities (LOs) or province-wide LOs and to contribute professional development resources—ranging from simple PDFs to webinars—to the provincial database. Moreover, although the websites were to work together, the actual needs and work processes of each individual consortium proved to be unique. The websites had to serve these unique requirements.
The only possible solution was to customize the content management system and its components and to create other components from scratch, always fulfilling both the requirements for shared data and the unique needs of each consortium. All data is centrally recorded in single database.
In the completed responsive Joomla websites, LOs can be single events, linked events, or entire conferences. Third party LOs are also enabled. The display of LOs is prioritized to show that consortium's LOs first. And website visitors can view, register, and pay for any LO. A single user (e.g. a school secretary) can also register a group (e.g. several teachers).
Administrators have a rich variety of tools to manage each website, including the management of users, all types of LOs, single and group registrations, invoicing, and reporting.
