The Petroleum Tank Management Association of Alberta (PTMAA) is one of our many repeat clients. Our relationship began when we created an e-Learning website for PTMAA. A couple of years later, we redesigned their organization website.

VIRTUAL SOLUTIONS | TANGIBLE RESULTS

When we have repeat clients, we know the client trusts us. It's that simple. Our thanks to Don Edgecombe, Operations Manager, for selecting Chinook Multimedia to build the new PTMAA website and recently to update it again..

Our website had become obsolete for our intended purposes when we approached Chinook Multimedia about building a new one. Bob and his team evaluated our needs and recommended using Joomla because of its ability to handle large amounts of content. Chinook’s designers accepted our input on how it should look but made us aware of important features to maximize use and ease of use of the site. We’re very happy with the results of their work. We also had Chinook assist us with a technical training module that’s linked to our website. We’ve had many complements on both of these projects. Since we are a small organization that doesn’t have personnel dedicated to maintenance of our website we depend a great deal on Chinook to provide that service. They are timely and precise in delivering our maintenance requirements. The PTMAA would sincerely recommend Chinook to design, build and maintain websites.

MEETING CLIENT EXPECTATIONS

The PTMAA already had some knowledge of Joomla and the in-house skills to update their site. We were familiar with PTMAA's business from our work on the e-Learning project. Don Edgecombe provided examples of North American tank management websites to help grow our knowledge of the Association's requirements. We supplemented this knowledge by researching leading North American and European tank management websites.

Training and E-Learning Logo

Once we established the design requirements, work proceeded rapidly. We met with Don on a formal or informal basis as required. The website had to be developed quickly to meet the client's deadlines. Having signed the contract in late September, we completed most work in late October and launched ahead of schedule. We recently updated the Joomla content management system.

Elections Alberta Returning Officer and Election Clerk Training Website

Elections Alberta is one of our many repeat clients. We first began working together when Elections Alberta required an online assessment tool to be used in the selection of returning officers and election clerks for Alberta provincial elections.

Training and E-Learning Logo

VIRTUAL SOLUTIONS | TANGIBLE RESULTS

Elections Alberta needed to identify a company that had a pre-existing technology that could provide the required testing of applicants — the overall development time was approximately one month. As we soon learned, however, extensive customized reporting of results was also required. We had almost no time to troubleshoot the system, and it had to work perfectly. Could we meet the deadline?

We did, and we have since provided hosting and maintenance services for the Returning Officer & Election Clerk Assessment website.

The assessment tool consists of a series of modules with questions developed by Elections Alberta to measure the qualifications of prospective candidates. Candidates who successfully complete the test can apply to Elections Alberta for the positions.

Many Voices Social Studies Resources Created for Pearson Education Canada

Pearson Education and Chinook Multimedia have worked together on several long-term projects, including the Many Voices CD-ROMs, for Grade 1-5 students in Alberta.

VIRTUAL SOLUTIONS | TANGIBLE RESULTS

Testimonial: Pearson Education Canada

Pearson Education Canada hired Chinook Multimedia to create digital resources at Grades 1-5 as one component of our Many Voices program... to match the new Alberta Social Studies Program of Studies… Chinook demonstrated tremendous creativity in the choices of... activities at each grade level.. The Many Voices program is in use in over 75% of Alberta schools. One of our clear differentiators [compared to our competition] was the quality, approach, and content of the digital resources.

Many Voices Resources

MEETING CLIENT EXPECTATIONS

Pearson Education Canada hired Chinook Multimedia to create the grade 1-5 Many Voices Interactive Multimedia Internet Research CD-ROMs for use in Alberta social studies classes. The CD-ROMs demonstrate our ability to design interactive, activity-based publications that deliver a program of client objectives and Alberta Education outcomes on a grade-by-grade basis to target audiences. We also created a teacher resource that provides a correlation of all outcomes to CD content and activities.

Training and E-Learning Logo Writing and Editing

The CDs consist of a simulated web browser with simplified functionality suitable for children as young as 5 years of age. The CDs also featured our multimedia authoring software, cooleCreate (called the Presentation Tool).

The greatest challenge in this project was to be certain that young users would be able to use the resource and be actively engaged in the learning activities. Considerable research went into the learning design and the creation of an intuitive interface. The GUI is fairly consistent in functionality across grade levels. The "websites" are geared to grade level. Each has its own design and includes a variety of media to broaden user appeal. Each "website" also contains one or more activities that can be completed using the Presentation Tool. The Presentation Tool includes functionality that appeals to younger users (pencil tool, stamp, shape) and older users (tools to raise or lower the level of an object, change its opacity, rotate it). Users can click the media button to include a wide variety of media in their creations. Young users can create and publish their own multimedia products using the Presentation Tool, just as if they were on a sophisticated social networking website.

Many Voices Resources 2

Melina Akins provided helped to envision and write many of the activities and resources. We also worked directly with subject matter experts for most topics. Chinook Multimedia provided research, design, programming, writing, editing, and copyediting services. Pearson Education oversaw the production and provided tremendous guidance and feedback throughout the development life cycle of each CD-ROM. Alberta Education reviewed and provided feedback on all content. The Many Voices CD-ROMs are used in Alberta Elementary Schools.

Edmonton Police Service Created Witness Scene

Over the years, we had the pleasure of developing a number of training courses for Edmonton Police Service (EPS). The courses are used in training Edmonton Police officers after they have been on the force two years.

VIRTUAL SOLUTIONS | TANGIBLE RESULTS

The Edmonton Police Service courses are now used by other police forces in Alberta and some other provinces. Nationally, the RCMP, and internationally, Interpol, began adopting the courses. With a need for greater capacity, course development and marketing moved from the EPS to the Alberta Investigative Skills Education Program, Solicitor General Staff College, GOA, Solicitor General and Public Security. To prepare for the larger market, the Solicitor General Staff College hired Chinook Multimedia to update the design and content based on feedback from subject matter experts and users. We also copyedited the courses. The Canadian Police Knowledge Network now manages the courses.

MEETING CLIENT EXPECTATIONS

Typically, EPS provided a draft storyboard and concept, and we met to discuss various development scenarios. We then provided development recommendations, a budget, and schedule for discussion.

Once we had an agreed approach, we created illustrations and animations, programmed the course, and assisted with storyboard development. We sometimes worked directly with EPS subject matter experts to assist with editing.

We thoroughly enjoyed working with EPS and the EPS team members, including Rick Gagnon, Detective Retired, EPS; Carol Glasgow, Sergeant, EPS; Cheryl Lepatski, eLearning Instructional Designer, EPS; and Betty Froese, Curriculum Designer, EPS.

Nova Scotia History 11

Chinook Multimedia created the learning management system and all of the content for the Nova Scotia Department of Education's innovative, online History 11 course.

VIRTUAL SOLUTIONS TANGIBLE RESULTS

The project was challenging. The deadline was even more challenging. Creating an LMS from scratch is no easy proposition. We also had to create all content from scratch in collaboration with the Department. We began work in late April with the requirement that we launch the course to some 10,000 Nova Scotia students in September.

We launched the course on schedule. To our knowledge, it was first learning management system in the world to integrate Flash for the front end, MySQL for the back end, and PHP for scripting.

Currently, Nova Scotia students still use the course.

The degree of success that ... [the] interactive skills labs had for teaching historical skills such as analysing artifacts, or photographs or maps is but one example of the online tools developed using the very new Adobe Flash. The fact that this site, history11.edenet.ns.ca is still active and being used by this course, is a testament to Bob and his team’s technical visioning combined with solid pedagogical understandings that stand the test of multiple years of public school instructional usage. Many teachers with other disciplines as their majors, have expressed gratitude for the skills labs as they provided a base professional development option for advancing their own skillsets as well as [those of] their students.

MEETING CLIENT EXPECTATIONS

The content included 15 virtual laboratories in which students could learn the skills needed to analyzie, and experiment with, historical resources. The content also included 5 major unit activities, each rooted in real historical context, in which students could apply their skills:

  • as a researcher working for the Standing Committee on National Defence to develop a Decision Criteria Matrix to help determine Canada's response to a threatening (fictitious) international crisis
  • as a researcher working for a Royal Commission that is to determine whether the welfare state will be expanded or cut back
  • as a policy advisor for a political action movement that is considering becoming a full-fledged political party
  • as a researcher investigating the Francophone experience in Canada and the practical and reasonable limits that people face in seeking to protect and preserve their culture in a multicultural society
  • as an expert negotiator weighing the appropriate balanced between natural resource management and First Nations treaty rights.
