The Building Trades of Alberta wanted a new website to showcase the services it provides to 75,000 skilled building trades professionals working in 16 trade unions in Alberta and to highlight its amazing commitment to responsible citizenship in the province.

Within three months of the launch of the new BTA website, it skyrocketed from a dozen or so keywords with top ten Google rankings to almost 150 keywords with top ten Google rankings! The total sessions and new users both increased dramatically - in the neighbourhood of 400%.

MEETING CLIENT EXPECTATIONS

Our work started with a strategic plan for the longterm development of the BTA website. The plan provided a basis for selecting a content management system and components that would deliver the results BTA needed. We then worked collaboratively with the BTA to ensure its website reflected the crucial role the organization and its affiliated unions play in providing professional building trades workers to Alberta's natural resource, commercial, and infrastructure sectors.

Because the BTA has a small staff, we also helped out with research, content writing, and editing, while BTA provided the necessary raw resources and subject matter expertise. In the process, we learned a lot about the building trades, the BTA's partners, the enviable record the BTA has for supporting Alberta communities, and the amazing training facilities that the affiliated unions offer to their members. Those training facilities have to be one of the best kept secrets in the province. The BTA wanted to be able to manage the completed website independently but had limited staff time for the work. Two essentials for the project's success were an easy-to-manage content management system and prompt post-launch support on an as-needed basis.

We think the resulting website captures the BTA's vision of an “organic” online resource that can continue to evolve and grow over time, keeping pace with changing priorities and stakeholder input. The powerful Joomla content management system and integrated social media give the Building Trades of Alberta the right tools for the job.
